Work has finally started on building the skate park! Construction equipment is in place and the initial brush clearing, drainage and grading has begun....

June 28, 2007 - GREAT NEWS:
Members of the Sonoma County Open Space District's Advisory Committee endorsed
funding of the the City's grant application for $529,575, to pay for restoration
of many of the park elements we were forced to eliminate due to budget constraints.
This will allow us to build the beginner skate area, a bathroom, the garden improvements, an irrigation system, and an number of other features that will greatly enhance the park. The City will need to work with the contractor to put these elements back into the project. We are hoping to start construction later this summer.
Special thanks to Mary Ann Petler and Kenyon Webster, who spent considerable time applying for this grant.

Oct. 28, 2006 - An update on the skate park/garden project.
Last Friday, the City's Planning Director met with Vasconi Engineering, the contractor for the project, Zach Wormhoudt, the park designer, and David Dippe, our WCSP representative to discuss cost reduction ideas for the park. The main ones discussed are to delete the skate structure beginner area, and retain the advanced pool. Also discussed possible substitution of a lower-cost rebar for one of the rebar elements; eliminating a stair feature in the skate structure; possibly eliminating some perimeter curbs in the skate structure; and possibly eliminating a retaining wall feature in the skate structure; possibly put the entire drainage ditch in a pipe instead of having an open section; maybe changing the perimeter fence from chain link to a non-climb farm-type fence. Building the block wall (between the skate park and the Gun Club) with donated materials and labor was also a possibility. Hopefully, the beginning skate structure will be completed as more funds become available.
Soon, the contractor will be getting back to the City with estimated savings. As most of you know, we are trying to reduce the cost of the park from $1.5 Million (the low bid from Vasconi) to $1.1 Million (current available City funding). Stay tuned for more updates.
We are very happy to announce that the WCSP was awarded a $1,000 Community grant from the Rotary Club of Sebastopol Sunrise. We want to thank the Sunrise Rotary for their continued support. Please support their efforts by attending the upcoming 'Cajun Zydeco Festival' on Sept. 9, 2006.
Also, recently, our City Council allocated an additional $8,000 to the skate park project from a State Workforce Housing Program grant. This grant rewards cities which produce affordable housing. This amount will be added to the approximate $550,000 which the City has already allocated for the park. The estimated construction cost for the park is about $1,000,000.
W.C.S.P. wants to extend a BIG THANKS to Jasper O'Farrell's, Home Blown Glass, and Vulgar Skateboards for donating raffle items and raising $200 for the skate park!
