West County Skate Park, Inc. Mission Statement
"The specific purpose of this corporation is to build a public skate park in our town for the youth of our community to use." (Article II. B.)
History and Background
Through the support of successive waves of young skaters over the last 10+ years, and with the collaboration of the kids and parents of West County Skate Park (a community-based non-profit created specifically for this purpose) with the City of Sebastopol, the RITES Project (Return Intentions Towards Ecological Sustainability), and the Sculpture Jam group from the Sebastopol Center for the Arts and other organizations, a site has been secured on Laguna Park Way in Sebastopol, and the vision of a unique project created.
On May 27, 2003, the City Planning Commission unanimously approved a Use Permit for the project, marking a major milestone in creating a new park for the community. On December 9, 2003, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors approved a $125,000 Open Space grant to assist in purchase of the site. We also have an approved $200,000 grant from the Sonoma County Partnerships for Youth project.
We are planning the creation of an unusual park-a combination of a skate park, and a public community garden. The project site is presently used as an informal community garden (through the generosity of the present private landowner). We plan to build a state-of-the-art skate park, and to surround it with a community garden with both individual plots and demonstration areas for sustainable gardening practices.
We also plan to incorporate art into the project. Artists from the Sculpture Jam project of the Sebastopol Center for the Arts are participating in the design process, adding to the creative mix and the unique character of this community park.
